About the Multiverse
As I've said on various websites across the Internet, I started writing LotE (WoV, actually, but they were the same story at the time) back in 2009, and launched a rather successful fanfiction "career". Usually I also talk about how I finished LotE in summer of 2010, then became dissatisfied and started writing it again in summer of 2011.
What I haven't usually admitted, though, is that LotE of 2010 was very different from its current form. The heroes were confident, skilled, and intelligent. They were on equals with the legendaries, not below them. And in fact, the legendaries were more involved in the war with Giratina. There was a conclusive, definite end to the story. I developed LotE into an entire series, too. And the readers loved it.
That all changed in 2011. Actually, no, that's not true. I've always had a bad habit of rewriting. But 2011-2012 was when my revisions went wild. Paragraphs exploded. Characters changed drastically. I launched Volume IV. The problem, though, was that I always assumed a certain revision would 'fix' the story; so most of the time, I didn't bother keeping the old drafts. That meant, if I didn't like a rewrite, I had to change the story again.
During 2012, LotE swung between the optimistic 2010 chapters and the pessimistic 2011 chapters. A Retriever in Exile was a major turning point; most of the other stories in the series were booted out, and many characters were completely redefined. By November, LotE had completely changed. It was polished and more reader-friendly than the crapsack chapters of 2012, but while still a fascinating story to work with.
Since then, most of the changes have been with the readers in mind. So now, I try to keep all versions of LotE up-to-date, and I'm rewriting all the old stories to fit in the current continuity.
But even though I feel LotE is headed in a really good direction, I also feel some nostalgia for the original versions. Most writers don't go through so much trouble for their stories, plotholes and inconsistencies be damned. That's why readers can enjoy stories from other writers, because they know the story won't be different tomorrow. I'd like to say I've slowed down with the rewrites, and that the current version of LotE is user-friendly.
So what happened to the Sparktail, Thalia, Insyte, and Rush of the 2010 LotE? And what about the many different versions of Slick and Insyte in Route 50's roleplays? Some day, I'm going to write a story that spans the multiverse. I don't know when I will, but probably not until LotE is done.
